Lost Soul
Kanya skidded to a stop on her knees by Alexâs side, fingers frantically fighting with the clasps on the red first aid backpack.
A light groan behind her drew her attention. The Succubus was moving!
Kanya bit her bottom lip, forcing herself not to turn around. Alex had said she was human again and had told her to bring the woman along. The strange, magical man had kept her alive so far. Right now, she needed to focus on keeping him from bleeding out.
His wounds were numerous. His forehead had a bruise with a red gash, his thigh had a deep knife wound, and his arms were covered in scrapes. A cut ran from his collarbone to his ear. His ribs had a deep, ragged gash like the one on his right bicep.
Those last two were not made with a knife, though she had no clue what it was. Maybe grazed by a bullet? She could see hints of ribs through the one under his arm.
Twitchy was still sitting on his chest, nudging his chin with his little nose.
Kanya ran her fingers through his short black hair. Besides a few parts crusted with dry blood, she found nothing unusual. She didnât know where to start, and none of the wounds looked like they would be life-threatening. In fact, they had mostly stopped bleeding on their own.
Kanya pushed him, heaving with all her strength to turn the large man on his side. Twitchy, the squirrel spurred into action, bounding off his chest and taking a watchful perch atop a bookshelf.
A shallow red slice marked his back, but that was it.
Kanya took a steadying breath that did very little to calm her nerves. It was impossible to even tell why he was unconscious. From what she had seen of the fight, he was frozen in place by the Succubus. After Kanya had scratched the woman with the flowerâs thorns, he was freed and attacked the Succubus. He didnât pass out till the creature was defeated; even still, it was slow and gradual, like he was too exhausted to stay awake.
Whatever was happening, that hooded man was sure Alex would die without intervention. So she needed to intervene.
The Succubusâor former Succubusâgasped behind Kanya.
Kanya glanced back to see the woman shaking like a leaf, her shackled hands hugging herself to cover her bare chest. Her eyes were watery as she curled on her side as if sitting was too much effort.
âDid I kill him?â
Kanya looked back at Alex. âI donât know whatâs happening to him.â
The woman whimpered lightly. âIâm so sorry. I didnât want to, I swear.â
Kanya ignored the womanâs cries. âYou know whatâs happened?â
The redhead shook her head.
Kanya put her fingers to Alexâs throat again. This time, it was more for the comfort of feeling his pulse than checking it. She may not know what to do, but at least he was still breathing.
She only knew how to do CPR and mouth-to-mouth. Both of which seemed useless to a breathing man with a heartbeat.
