TWELVE

Silas had thought there was no place like home. Yet, home was no longer the same.

It killed him to face everybody—especially Josiah’s family. Somehow, he felt like he’d failed them. Why should he get to come home alive and well? Why did he survive and Josiah not? He wished it would have been him instead. Josiah didn’t deserve this. His family didn’t deserve this.

He felt like he’d asked Gott why a thousand times. And a thousand times, there’d been no answer.

“It was Gott’s will.” Everybody said it, but was it really true? Why would Der Herr will his best friend’s death? It didn’t make sense, to his thinking.

“Silas?” A knock on the door accompanied his brother Paul’s voice.

“Kumm in.”

His brother sat on the edge of the bed next to him and released a sigh. Paul’s hand clasped Silas’s shoulder. “I’m sorry about Josiah.”

Silas shoved away a frustrated tear and nodded to acknowledge his brother. “He was my best friend. I’ll never forget him.”

Paul’s eyes clouded over, and he moved closer. He touched his brother’s forearm and locked eyes with him. “If you want, I can be your new best friend.”

His brother’s heartfelt words touched him deeply. A heavy sob escaped his chest and he grabbed onto his brother and held on for dear life. He truly had the best family.

Silas regained his composure. “I’d like that, Paul.”

Jah, he’d lost Josiah and it hurt like crazy. But there were still blessings all around him. He shouldn’t forget that.

Mamm appeared at the opening of his door. “Buwe, kumm into the kitchen. Your dat and I want to discuss something with all of you kinner.”

Silas glanced at Paul and they both rose and followed Mamm. Dat sat at his usual place at the kitchen table. “Sit, buwe.”

Martha, Susan, and Nathaniel were seated too, but Silas guessed that baby Emily was probably in bed already.

“You’re probably wondering why we’ve called you here.”

“Jah, especially since there’s no food.” Paul deadpanned.

Silas elbowed Paul for his comment. “This isn’t the time for jokes.”

“Nee, it isn’t, but we all need to smile sometimes.” Mamm reminded.

How long had it been since he’d smiled? Two weeks, at least? He was quite certain he hadn’t smiled since Josiah’s disappearance. It seemed like it happened forever ago, yet it seemed like chust yesterday. How could that be?

“This is going to seem sudden. Especially to you, Silas.” Dat’s words were sober.

Silas frowned. What were they talking about?

“We spoke with the bishop, and he believes this will be a gut thing for our family.”

“What would be a gut thing?” He wished they’d chust come out and say it.

“Patience, sohn.” Mamm reprimanded.

“There is an Amish sister church in Indiana.” Dat explained. “We will sell our place and move. The land is much more affordable there, so we believe that will help you buwe when it’s time to take a fraa and start your own families. We can buy property twice the size of what we have now. There is a place for sale right now. It already has a dawdi haus attached.
