RULE 30

Be wary of wines that aren’t clear about exactly where they come from.

The reason for all that nitpicking about places and appellations is that place—terroir, or “somewhereness,” to borrow a fellow writer’s term—is the major reason why wine is so fussed over. Place matters. And there are many would-be “appellations” that tell you very little; the “Central Coast” of California encompasses hundreds of miles, which is fine for a cheap everyday wine but not if you’re paying for something unique.

Keep a close eye on place-names that don’t match up neatly with real spots on the map. “Sonoma Coast” can apply to fantastic Pinot Noir, but it encompasses half of Sonoma County. The less specific the place, the more likely the wine was assembled, not grown in one particular spot—which is to say, more likely that it’s the wine equivalent of fast food.
