Bounce woke in a hospital bed, Snow and Aviary flanking him in low-seated chairs. Their heads hovered around his waist. He jumped, tried to run away. Snow stood, held his large body down with her small hands. Bounce felt an aching weight all over his body.

“I fell into the earth,” Bounce said.

“They said this would happen,” Aviary said to Snow.

“Avi,” Snow said.

“They said he wouldn’t make sense,” Avi said.

“Avi,” Snow said.

“Because of the drugs,” Aviary said, pointed at an IV bag dangling from a plastic tower.

Bounce followed her finger with his eyes, saw the bag, saw the monitors and their squiggling lines, saw the white walls, saw the room grow large as his eyes adjusted, saw it shrink back down, saw their faces worry at him.

“Do you remember what happened?” Snow asked.

“We know what happened,” Aviary said.

“Avi,” Snow said.

Aviary huffed, pushed her feet into the tiles, slid back, hung her head.

“I was walking,” Bounce said. “I was on the curb.”

“Okay,” Snow said.

“It was all over me,” Bounce said.

“What was?” Snow asked.

Bounce passed out.
