Chorus effect best practices

Chorus effects can be great on accompanying instruments to surround your lead instrument or vocal. As a general guideline, consider applying chorus effects to guitars, electric pianos, snare drums, bass guitars, and backing vocals. Adding chorus effects increases the perceived stereo width of a sound, making it appear larger.

When chorus effects are applied to vocals, it sounds similar to vocal doubling. Natural vocal doubling is where a singer’s vocals are repeated by backup singers. With natural vocal doubling, there is a variation in timing and pitch with the backup vocals. A chorus effect resembles this sound by also creating variation in timing and pitch. The overall effect is a larger-sounding vocal.

When mixing, you want to place chorus effects before your delay and reverb effects in the signal chain. This way, the chorus effect feels tied to the vocal. Delay and reverb feel more tied to the environment that the sound is existing in.
