Billâs Journey Toward a Vital Life
After he had practiced emotional acceptance and willingness for a few weeks, Bill noticed that he enjoyed social connections with his classmates and that his pain levels seemed to decrease when he was focused on others in the pain class. He was surprised to find that he could go to a movie and sit through the whole thing without a pain episode of huge proportions afterward, as had always happened to him in the early years of his chronic pain problem. He realized that he had previously gone to the movies alone; he wondered if the difference this time was his willingness to go with his wife and experience pain in order to do something positive for their relationship. Bill began to plan daily activities that would engage his attention in the areas of his life that he wanted to build, including spending more quality time with his childrenâall in service of moving toward his values and his true north. He found that he could go to the park with them if he did it at the start of the day. He could then rest strategically to restore his physical strength.
Bill began stretching regularly a couple of times each day to help manage his pain, even while accepting the fact that he would probably experience pain for the rest of his life. He still struggled occasionally with anger about his fate, particularly on days when his pain flared up. However, he stuck with his planned activities even when he was in pain. His relationship with his wife improved to the point that she told him he was like a new person. Bill was on the pathway out of depression!
