Chapter 11

Lucas was still seething when he sent Emmaline to freshen up before her training session. The truth of the matter was he’d sent her away so he could calm down. The change would not be far off if he did not get a hold of his anger.

In one fluid motion he pushed everything off of his desk. Ledgers banged against the wall, and papers fluttered in the air before settling onto the floor in a pattern of disarray. Pounding his fists on the desk did nothing to lessen his anger, but that was more preferable than shredding it to pieces. Explaining that would be rather bothersome, not to mention difficult.

"Looking for something, mate?" Ethan asked as he poked his head in the study. "I heard the commotion and figured I would come take a look."

Lucas shot him a baleful gaze, hoping to deter Ethan from entering, but it seemed to have the opposite effect. Closing the door behind him, Ethan took a seat on the nearest settee, looking as though nothing unusual had occurred and Lucas's study had always been in such a state.

"You are the last person I wish to speak with right now," Lucas growled.

"Ah, the wolf has come out to play. Glad to see the building is still standing."

"Go to hell, Ethan."

"Not for some time I'm afraid. Being an immortal does that you know."

Lucas closed his eyes and breathed in deep until images of attacking Ethan receded. It wasn't his fault Emmaline had wanted him as a mentor.

"When did you meet Emmaline?" Lucas asked, his teeth clicking together from being elongated.

The change was trying to overcome him and even though he could keep it at bay, it still showed up in fragments. The first noticeable thing to occur was for his eyes to glow, followed by his fingernails turning into claws. If he was deeply disturbed, like now, his teeth lengthened and sharpened.

"I haven't," Ethan said, confusion evident in his tone. "I assume she is the cause for the new interior decoration I'm currently witnessing?"

"She is."

"I take it things are going well, eh?"

"She asked that you be her instructor," Lucas ground out.

Ethan's eyes went wide. "I must admit, I did not foresee that coming. What brought this about?"

"I have no idea. To make matters worse, I exposed myself to her."

"Well, you kind of have to do that in order to have sex, mate. It's the first step actually," Ethan said with a chuckle.

"For the love of God, be serious. I damn near turned my fork into a paperweight, and I'm pretty sure my eyes were lit up brighter than a firework display."

Ethan instantly sobered. "I knew what you meant. I just wanted you to calm down a bit. She didn't run off screaming, did she?"

"No, and I'm not sure why." He pinched the bridge of his nose. "She's going to demand an explanation, and I can't give it to her."

"Maybe she won't.”

"She's is the daughter of a late physician and although I’m sure she's seen all manner of eye color, fluorescent is not one of them.
