Cinema as Vision plus

This project began with the feeling that Cinema was underrated, and that conviction spread to the wider issue of Vision in general. In fact, I argue that Cinema is a special case for Vision and deserves to be rated more highly than the general status I would claim for the noblest of the senses. While the same claims can be made for both the quantitative and qualitative superiority of Cinema as for Vision, the particular circumstances that Cinema brought together entitle it to special status as a particularly intense form of Vision. Audiences seated in the dark, looking at a single illuminated surface displaying Love, Hate, War, Action, Violence – in a word, Emotion, are taking part in a peculiarly focussed expression of Vision. Those facts we take for granted about going to Cinema are, viewed in the abstract, rather remarkable and a laboratory for Vision that ingeniously makes the most of its already extravagant qualities.
