Chapter 11

Helena had attended two more balls where Lord Evans had not been in attendance. Where was he? Her last communication from him had been a short note canceling their carriage ride.

That was eight days ago.

Lord Evans was an enigma that she didn’t seem to have the code to crack. One moment, he was kissing her passionately, making her toes curl in her slippers, and the next, he was reserved and withdrawn. Her silly heart pined for him and his soul-scorching kisses. One glance at him, and her body was on fire. No other gentlemen she’d met this Season had caused such a reaction in her, especially not Lord Robertson.

“Helena, dear, are you almost ready?” Julia asked, walking into her bedchamber.

Her lady’s maid had finished arranging her hair on top of her head in an artful combination of curls and braids and was clasping a pearl necklace around her neck. “There you go, my lady. You look beautiful,” Hastings said.

Helena looked in the mirror. “Thank you, Hastings. As usual, you’ve done a superb job. You may go.”

Her maid curtseyed and left her alone with her mother.

“Helena, you look troubled, my dear. Whatever is wrong?”

Helena sighed. Her mother wouldn’t understand, and she was tired of arguing with her. For the past week, Helena had kept hoping that Lord Evans would be in attendance to quell her mother’s objections, but so far, he’d been absent from events and even from London itself as far as she could tell. No one had mentioned seeing him about Town. Perhaps, he had London. Her mother believed the errant lord had decided she wasn’t marchioness material after all.

“Is this about Lord Evans again?” When Helena didn’t answer, her mother continued her lecture. “You must give up your silly notion of love with this man. It’s obvious Lord Evans no longer finds you a suitable match…if he ever did.”

“I don’t know, Mama. Perhaps something happened, and he had to leave Town suddenly.”

Julia shook her head. “If something had happened, he surely would have sent you a note explaining his absence. That has not happened. Now, Lord Robertson is a well-respected gentleman, and he is here and desires your company.”

“I don’t want to marry him merely because he’s well-respected.”

“Helena, if you can’t have a marquis, then an earl is better than none. Lord Robertson will give you a good life. You will be a countess and want for nothing. Imagine the life you could give your children.” Helena was fidgeting with her pearl necklace when her mother delivered some unexpected news. “Marcus will not sponsor you for another Season. He wants to see you wed so he can return to the country. He doesn’t like London.”

“Is that true? Marcus never said anything to me about it.”

“Why would he tell you? He’s the head of the family, and it’s his decision whether or not to allow you a second Season.”

“Marcus knows I want to marry for love and would never force me to marry against my will.”

“Perhaps that was true in the past, but not now.
