CHAPTER 12
Trent and Radstock were walking back to the hotel after enjoying a nice, leisurely meal. Two thick steaks with red wine more than filled them up after going days with meager meals. Radstock elbowed him, causing him to look up. Standing not twenty feet from him, staring at him and Radstock in disbelief, was Lady Eugenie and a young man.
"Eugenie? Eugenie?" he murmured as he frantically picked up his pace.
"Trent? What on earth are you doing here in Leicester?"
He took her hands and squeezed them. "Looking for you! Radstock and I have been desperately searching for you since Northshire abducted you at the theater." He looked pensively at the young man. "Who is this?"
"I was hoping you would be," she said, turning to the young man. "This is Thomas. He helped me escape the duke."
"Thomas, I'll never be able to thank you enough for rescuing Lady Eugenie. Were you employed by Northshire?"
"I was a groom and sometimes footman for the duke, my lord."
"Trent..."
He interrupted, knowing she was concerned about what would happen to the young man. "Thomas, why don't you go with Lord Radstock. He'll see you get a hot meal and arrange a place for you to sleep. We can talk again later, after you've rested."
"Thank you, my lord," Thomas replied as Radstock guided the boy to the hotel.
Trent turned back to Eugenie. She was still wearing the same gown she had been wearing that night at the theater. "Come, let's get you a hot meal and a bath as well. I'll see if some clothes can't be found for you."
"The dukeâs men came after us and we had to hide a short while. I am quite hungry. Thomas and I have been traveling trying to find a village or town so we could head back toward London."
He guided her toward the hotel door. "You're okay, aren't you? The duke or his men didn't hurt you, did they?"
"I'm fine, Trent. Just cold and hungry."
Once inside the hotel, he approached the front desk and explained their predicament. The clerk eyed Eugenie with a raised brow but went about his business. He promised a hot meal would be delivered to the suite, and a seamstress would be called upon to help clothe Lady Eugenie.
He led her up the stairs to the suite he and Radstock had procured. "Come, I'll show you to the bathing chamber. I'm sure you'd like a good soak before anything else."
"I would, and thank you, Trent."
"No need to thank me, Eugenie."
Suddenly she wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed him. "Yes, there is. You never gave up looking for me. For that I'll be eternally grateful."
All of Trent's self-control flew out the window as he reclaimed her lips, kissing her deeply. He loved her with all his heart and now that he had her back, he wasn't about to let her go.
Suddenly, he pulled away. "Come, bathe first, then you can tell me everything."
"Of course," she replied.
He showed her the bathing chamber, going so far as to start the water for her.
