Besides these losses, the tough, deadly Grumman F6F Hellcats swept the sky of Japanese aircraft, destroying them by the hundred for relatively light losses. Hellcat ace Lieutenant Alexander Vraciu described some of the action, referring to a Japanese plane as a âmeatballâ due to its round, red recognition symbol: âThe enemy planes had been pretty well chopped down, but a substantial number remained. [â¦] The sky appeared full of smoke and pieces of planes, and we were trying to ride herd on the remainder to keep them from scattering. Another meatball broke formation ahead, and I slid onto his tail [â¦] I gave him a short burst, but it was enough [â¦] the burning plane twisted crazily out of control.â (Tillman, 1994, 21).
