Chapter 5
New Friends, Old Lovers
âTake me home, then make your phone call. Find out whatâs going
on and deal with it. Then, if everythingâs cool, call me tomorrow.â
âYou know what, if itâs all the same to you,â Jim said, âI think Iâd
like you to stay.â
Steve grinned. âSure, Jim. Whatever you want.â
âThanks.â
âIâll sit out on the deck while you call him.â
âYouâre terrific, you know that?â
âYep, and Iâm glad you noticed,â Steve said and walked away.
Jim went to his room and sat on the edge of the bed with the
phone in his hands. He stared at it for a long while, then took a deep
breath and blew it out. He dialed the number. It rang only once.
âHi,â the familiar voice on the other end said.
âHi.â Jim forced himself to speak, though his voice sounded stiff. âI
got your message.â
âThank you for calling back. I wasnât sure you would.â
âIt sounded kind of important.â
âIt is,â Alan said. âCould we meet? Iâd like to talk to you in person.â
âLook, Alan,â Jim said. âIâm seeing someone andâ¦â
âIâm not trying to start anything, Jim. But I really do need to see
you.â
Jim took a deep breath and let it out slowly. His first instinct was
to tell Alan to forget it, but something about Alanâs tone told him to say
yes. âFine. When and where?â
âCan you meet me in an hour at our place?â
Jim snorted. âNo, Alan, not there. Pick another place.â
âHow about Freakyâs?â
Jim groaned. âFor Peteâs sake, Alan. You know I donât do the
tranny thing.â He shook his head. Alan, the flamboyant. But what the
hell. âNever mind. If thatâs where you want to meet, Iâll see you in an
hour.â
âThanks,â Alan said softly.
Jim pushed the off button. He put the handset back on the base
then just sat there, staring off into space. His heart pounded and his
throat felt tight. âWhat am I doing?â He scrubbed his hands over his face.
âSteve! Hey, Steve!â
âYou bellowed?â Steve swaggered into the bedroom, a half a piece
of pizza in his hand.
âSuck my dick,â Jim said as he lay back on the bed and shoved his
jeans down to his knees. He needed to connect, to be in the here and
now, and not lost in painful memories of Alan.
âWhat happened?â Steve stuffed the last bite of pizza in his mouth
and cocked his head.
âNot now, okay? Just suck my dick.â
An hour later, Jim sat in his car in the parking lot of Freakyâs Bar.
He had gone with Alan to see the drag queens and burlesque shows and
while he found them entertaining, he never really got into transvestites.
But Alan loved them and often dressed in drag himself. Taking a deep
breath, Jim stepped out of his car and went inside. It took a moment for
his eyes to adjust to the dim light, but when they did, he spotted Alan at
a corner table waving him over.
âHi.â Jim walked to the table and pulled out a chair. As he took his
seat he gave Alan the once-over. His former lover appeared much thinner
and didnât look quite like himself.
âIâm so glad you came,â Alan said.
