CHAPTER THIRTY-TWO

Gabe Giordano

I’m home from the hospital, and I got this tight beat going, a song I’m about done. No one except me uses our music studio, uses this equipment. Mom hasn’t been in since we moved to Lake Awana. She’d like my song, at least the piano part. It’s got this dance-meets-hard-rock-meets-classical thing. See, that’s what I like—mixing genres. I go faster on the keys, rise from the bench, stand as I play. I wanna share this with Savannah and all my bandmates, but I can’t get hold of Savannah—still—and Jia says I need time to heal before I do any performing. But no way I’ll heal without music.

My phone vibrates near my junk. Mayson. I can share my song with her. She’s gonna be our music manager, right?

Come to my place, her text reads.

I shove the phone in my pocket and do a limp-run through the old creaking house, head out to my Caddy. It’s daylight, bright with snow, and I swear, it looks like some kind of nature retreat out here. Not much of a retreat for me, though. I check the yard for any signs of trouble, glance back to the pool and green house and in-law suite, then across the street to Claire Noel’s cottage. It’s only a matter of time till Lester comes for the next installment. For me.

Images try to take over, but I block them. Just try not to even think as I head for the O’Berry place.

Inside Mayson’s bedroom, it’s dark, the thick drapes closed. I got this rush of adrenaline, like it’s conditioned to happen when I’m in this creepy-ass cabin, when I see Mayson. The candlelight from her dresser flickers over that hauntingly beautiful face of hers. I slip behind and wrap my arms around her. Damn, she smells good. Spices mix with something earthy, almost like the woods. I nuzzle my face at her neck, beneath her black hair, whisper, “Dance with me.”

“I don’t dance.”

“Come on.” I spin her toward me. “I can show you how.”

“I don’t want to dance.”

Guarantee Savannah’s been out dancing half a dozen times or more since I left. A pain shoots through my chest. Dammit, I can’t think about who’s dancing with her now, who’s wrapping his arms around her…

I gotta focus on Mayson ’cause Savannah won’t have me, and it’s torture without her, and I swear it’s like I’m gonna explode. Forcing my mind blank, I slide my hand around Mayson’s waist. “You just gotta loosen up.”

“What did I say?”

“Please?” I press my hips to hers, move her body with mine. Sing in her ear, “I’m gonna love you, can’t stop me…”

She pulls from me. “Who are you?”

I give a one-sided smile. “Gabe Giordano. Who do I have the pleasure of dancin’ with?”

“I’m not laughing, Gabe Giordano.”

“Why don’t you play? Hell, do you know how to laugh?”

“No.”

I tug off my shirt, throw it around her, tug her to me.

Mayson gapes. “What do you think you’re doing?”

“Heh.” I lift both hands in the air, my shirt dropping.
