Chapter 18: Darcy Returns
Three weeks later, when Darcy entered the front hall of Pemberley, Carson was there to meet him. âGood afternoon, Mr. Darcy. We did not expect you back this week.â
âI know, but I decided I had had enough of London and the crowds and could not wait to see the hills and dales of Derbyshire and spend time at Pemberley. Is Miss Darcy here?â
âShe is. I believe she and Miss Catherine are in the library with Miss Bennet.â
âMiss Bennet is here?â
âOh, yes. She comes quite often with Miss Catherine and spends a day or two, mostly in the library, wandering the grounds, or helping Dr. Stewart. I believe she feels quite at home here.â
âAnd why did you feel you needed to say that to me?â
âNo reason, sir. It just came out. I apologize.â
âDo not try to fool me, Carson, you sly old dog. I imagine she has captured your fancy just as she seems to capture everyone elseâs, and you are trying to encourage me to consider making her the mistress here.â
Trying to look shocked, Carson said, âSir, I assure you. I would never presumeâ¦â
âBalderdash. You have been here since I was a child and would presume just about anything. May I assume Mrs. Reynolds feels the same way?â
âSir, I would not presume to express Mrs. Reynolds wishes.â
Darcy laughed. âCarson, you are as presumptuous as a butler can be, and I would not have it any other way. I want to go to my room and change before I see Miss Bennet. Please do not tell anyone I am here. I will surprise them in the library.â
âVery good, sir.â
Carson then smiled and shook his head as he watched Darcy take the steps two of a time, as he hurried up to his room. He prayed that Darcy would have success. He had never met a gentlewoman like Elizabeth, and the thought of her as mistress of Pemberley was very pleasing to him. It would be wonderful for the family and the staff and tenants of Pemberley if Darcy should be able to win her heart.
Twenty minutes later, Darcy entered the library where Elizabeth was sitting on one of the sofas, leaning back against the arm of the sofa, her feet up on the sofa in front of her, intently reading a book. As he silently tiptoed across the room to her, he marveled at her beauty and the pleasing picture she presented, sitting there, her nose buried in a book. He could not imagine another woman of his acquaintance who could grace a sofa the way that she did.
When he was within a few feet of her, she sensed his presence, and looking around, saw him standing, looking at her. Somewhat flustered, she quickly stood in her bare feet and curtsied. âMr. Darcy. I did not hear you come in. I thought you were not to return until next week.â
âI was not, but suddenly found myself aching to be at Pemberley, and now I know why. Somehow I knew I might find you here.
