Sabine lightly tapped the quill against the inkwell before adding the numerical values in the ledger.

After spending the morning and afternoon nursing her back to health, Rowan had left to check on his cousin. Not wanting to be left alone with her thoughts, she’d headed to the Den. The last several nights with Rowan had left her managerial duties severely neglected, giving her something to keep her mind occupied. However, after having to add the same numbers for the third time, she gave up.

She tossed down the writing apparatus, rested her chin on her hands, and let her mind wander. It went straight to Rowan, as it always did recently.

What was going to happen between the two of them if his cousin called off her engagement and he didn’t require her services anymore? Would he simply walk out of her life, or would they continue their liaison?

If he left, she would be crushed. Just the thought of it sent her reeling. In the little time they had shared, he’d impacted her so greatly and not just on a physical level. Yes, the sexual encounters were wonderful, and they gave her hope that she was overcoming her past. Perhaps she would be able to have a long-term affair with someone in the late future, now that she knew she actually enjoyed sex.

Although, if she was being honest, it was because of Rowan. And she was starting to think he was the only one who would make her feel that way.

And she liked it, a lot.

Referring to herself as such had released some of the darkness in her soul. She believed she was on the precipice of healing, but she still had not jumped wholeheartedly into it.

Healing was sometimes more painful than the original wound.

She grasped a charm on her bracelet, running her thumb over it. That unconscious action usually helped alleviate some of her anxiety, but it was not working. Reaching for the ledger, she closed it and pushed it aside.

She kept telling herself that she wanted Rowan to stay in her life for a while longer because she was not sure if she was pregnant or not, but that was quickly becoming a lie.

Was she actually starting to have deeper feelings for him?

She shook her head as if that would help, but her denial was hard to maintain every time she kissed or touched him.

A knock at the door brought her out of her musings, providing a welcome distraction.

“Enter.”

The doorknob twisted, and the door swung open to reveal Rowan. He was wearing a simple white shirt with brown trousers and matching boots, but that was not what caught her attention. It was the radiant smile on his face. He was so handsome to her, and she wondered how anyone could see him as anything less than.
