Prestyn

One Month Later

My phone ringing brought me out of my deep thoughts as I looked at the caller ID, seeing Mrs. James’ name on my screen. I didn’t want to answer, but I didn’t want to be rude just because their son did me dirty. Besides, I was curious as to what she wanted, considering I hadn’t spoken to her in almost two months.

“Hello.”

“Good morning, Prestyn. How have you been?” she asked.

“I’ve been well, Mrs. Asata. How are you?”

“I’m getting better with time. I don’t want to hold you up, but I have a few questions, if you don’t mind.” I sat up in my lounge chair, debating on if I wanted to answer any questions she had for me. What the hell, why not?

“Go for it.”

“Well, the house… did you do that?” I sipped my spiked lemonade as I looked out at the morning sun rising on the outskirts of the beach. It was truly a breathtaking view as I thought of why she was questioning me about a home I’d burned down over a month ago.

“Not sure why it concerns you, but no. I left a candle burning, and it caught fire to the drapes,” I told her. It was a lie, but she didn’t need to know that.

“Oh wow. Why didn’t you call and tell us? There was a lot of sentimental things you guys had in that house. I’m sure it could have been saved before the fire had gotten to it.” I heard a bit of sarcasm laced with something that sounded as if she was accusing me. I frowned.

“Your tone sounds real accusatory, Asata.” Defensive. That was what I was now that her tone had changed from pleasant to sarcastic. So there was no Mrs. being added to her name.

“I’m not accusing you of anything, Prestyn. If it comes off that way, it’s simply because there may be some truth to it.”

I scoffed. “Is there a real reason you’re calling me right now?”

“I’m just trying to get to the bottom of all of these sudden changes. A half million-dollar home goes up in flames, along with his cars, you shutting down the company, and now we have over thirty something people to employ when we’re already fully staffed at the other two companies.”

“And that’s my problem because…?” I wasn’t trying to sound so detached, but this conversation was pointless to me, and I was trying to enjoy myself and get a peace of mind. I didn’t have time for whatever conversation about Kourtney she was trying to have with me.

“Look, I know what my son has done to you, and believe me, I know it hurts. But you have to think rationally about your actions. He loved you…”

“Asata, listen, I’m on vacation right now, and I’m trying to enjoy myself and get a peace of mind. What your son did can’t be excused, no matter how much you tell me he loved me. He couldn’t have loved me enough, to step outside of our marriage and produce an offspring that will carry his name, his legacy, for the rest of his life.
