Nineteen

I promised myself I’d keep my lips far away from Lamont Booker. Until he admitted to wanting to kiss me. Not because we were supposed to be dating, or in love, or whatever we told Luminary, but because he felt some kind of attraction to me. As much as I wanted to protect my heart from this fairy tale we’d built around us, I couldn’t resist finding out if these butterflies were real or a figment of my imagination.

Kissing him was pure instinct and letting him take the lead an easy choice. As he tugged me closer, I followed each movement until no space existed between us. Heat filled my middle and spread into every limb as he continued the languid exploration of my mouth.

He then trailed tender caresses along my jawline, leaving goosebumps in their wake. My head swam as he brushed his mouth along each dimple before lifting his head. I stared up at him, blinking rapidly to bring myself into the present.

What was he thinking? My brain shouted various bullet points as if I’d subconsciously been taking notes.

Magnificent.

Out of this world.

Ruined any other man after this.

Did Lamont have any of the same thoughts?

“That was . . .” He leaned his forehead against mine.

“All right? Better than average? Amazing?” I replied breathlessly.

“The best kiss of my life.”

I couldn’t have stopped the grin from spreading even if I wanted to hide my emotions and play coy. “I’ll accept that answer.”

Lamont chuckled and let go of my hands, sliding to the other end of the bench seat in one fluid movement.

“We’re sitting far away now?” I asked.

“Yes.” He nodded. “Because I don’t need to show up to the charity event looking like I was making out with my girlfriend the whole ride over.”

“What if you were?”

His heavy-lidded eyes met mine. “I would not survive a car ride like that.” His Adam’s apple bobbed. “I know we kind of talked about boundaries in the interview, but that was before we kissed.”

“What are you saying?”

“I’m saying now that we’ve kissed, we should revisit that talk. Like you staying over there and me over here.”

I laughed. I couldn’t help myself. “I’m not going to take your virtue.”

“You can’t.” His expression turned somber. “I’m not a virgin like you, which means I could very easily use my imagination to fill in the gaps. Which is why we can’t have a repeat of that”—he waved a hand between us—“too often. I’m no angel.”

I wasn’t either. His declaration emboldened me and made me want to erase the distance between us. The fact that this man felt the need to take a breather was heady to my senses. Thank the good Lord there was enough sense in my brain to keep me away. Was this that escape the Lord talked about regarding temptation? If so, I needed to remain in my corner and think logically, not emotionally.

“Okay. No more kissing.”

“Well, maybe a small good-night kiss,” Lamont suggested.

I nodded, trying to suppress the twitch of my lips. “And hands to ourselves.
