It had been a long time since Jaesu had gone on a mission with King. King’s hair was choppy short compared to the styled long black he’d known for most of their time together. King had been the one to approach him for a job, brazenly approaching the about to be new Syndicate Head with a printed, detailed resume that had nothing to do with illegal or criminal work. Jaesu had been amused and then acquiesced because no one was stupid enough to do such a thing. Many years later, King was still there, smoking leisurely as he drove amid the war laden streets of Seoul.

“Just a few more minutes,” said King, glimpsing the GPS screen on the car.

Jaesu nodded, nose peeked out in the open air in attempt to dissipate the smell of cigarette smoke. His phone vibrated in the centre console between the seats, glimpsing the recently saved number of Phoenix sent to him by Yu.

“Kim Jaesu,” Phoenix greeted him. “Yu sent me your number. He said you’ve been meaning to get into contact with me.”

“I have,” Jaesu replied. “Yu told me you’re in America. When do you plan to return?”

“In a day. Can our conversation wait until then? Or is it a conversation you’d prefer to have now?”

Jaesu ran through the course of events over the past few days. What had transpired in three weeks or less had been enough events to take them through an entire year. What he had learned strikingly since the fall of their Headquarters was that predicting the worst was inevitable.

“I would like to speak now if possible,” he told him.

“Go ahead.”

“You’ve been withholding information from us. You’re the one who’s been dealing with AmCo. agents in America. You’ve been making frequent trips to America. Do you have a personal vendetta against AmCo.?”

“It took you less time than I thought it would for you to figure it out. I do. You are aware of the true mastermind behind AmCo.?”

“I am.” Jaesu turned when King crushed his cigarette into the ash tray embedded into the dashboard. “You knew as well. Before us.”

“I have my ways,” admitted Phoenix. “Mason may have inherited none of his father’s ways, but he’s more ruthless than his father. His father and I are old enemies. He’s taken up that mantle, and the feud between his father and I have passed to him.”

“AmCo…”

“Has always been in existence. It was created by Hansul both in South Korea and mostly functional in America. It isn’t a new organization. It’s always been around, just on the down low, away from public eye or the whispers of social media. It has allowed them to grow into what they are today. That growth is mainly due to Mason’s brilliance. He’s an actual certified genius and a psychopath.”

“You have facts.”

“I have his medical records from America.

“Is there any other information you’ve been withholding from us?”

“Another piece of information would be better said in person. It’s inconsequential to this ongoing war. Once we’re both alive the next time we meet.
