By Friday, Sara could see that Tim was already popular with the students at Sweet Valley High. That worried her. She would have been much happier if her brother had kept to himself, but so far he had joined the photography club and had made a point of talking to everybody he met. Wherever he went, girls flirted with him, but he didn't seem to notice anyone but Amanda. My best friend, Sara thought bitterly.
Sara closed her locker door. As she turned to face the empty hallway, she felt an awful sense of loneliness. For the first time in months, her best friend wouldn't be going with her to dance class.
Sara lifted her chin. It's ironic, she thought. Tim was the one who had done everything wrong. He should be the real outcast. I'm the good one, but I'm the one who's being left all alone! It's just not fair, she thought. Tim and Amanda were together practically all the time, Amanda didn't seem to have any time for Sara anymore. And Bob was always finding fault with her.
Sara decided to walk to Mr. Krezenski's dance studio. She hadn't gone more than halfway when it began to rain.
It figures, Sara thought glumly as she hurried along the sidewalk, the rain soaking through her jeans and cotton shirt. It was one of those days when it seemed as if the whole universe was against her.
Mr. Krezenski greeted her with a sympathetic smile and a soft towel, and Sara hurried into the dressing room to dry off and change into her dance clothes.
"Where is Miss Hayes today?" the dance teacher inquired when she rejoined the class in the studio.
Sara sighed. "She's tutoring someone for a special test," she said. My stupid brother, she added mentally.
"I see." Mr. Krezenski went to his record player and put on one of the scratchy records he loved so much.
Sara began to move slowly with the music, letting it sweep her up in a mystical wave, letting it lift her out of herself. For the first time in days she felt a degree of peace, and her problems seemed to float away.
"Very good, Sara," Mr. Krezenski said when the music finally ebbed away and Sara came back from her mental travels. Mr. Krezenski was not extravagant with praise, and those words meant a lot to Sara. She felt a shaky smile settle on her mouth. "Thank you," she said quietly.
The old man nodded, excused the class with an affectionate gesture of his hand, then turned back to his beloved phonograph records. Sara went into the dressing room and changed back into her street clothes, which were still a little damp from the rain. She ignored the chatter of the other girls and hurried out.
Her heart was heavy as she peered through the rain-speckled glass of the studio's front window to see if her mother had remembered to pick her up. Sure enough, Mrs. Eastborne's convertible was parked at the curb, lights on, windshield wipers swishing back and forth.
