If only he’d thought a little harder about it, he might have realized that even the smallest change to the past can affect the trajectory of the future. Like a snowflake that triggers an avalanche, or a butterfly that flaps its wings and changes the course of history. In the same way, Max’s time jumps changed the world’s sequence of events in a way that was totally out of control.

But because Max didn’t know this, he was already getting excited about his next brilliant plan.

The following evening he smuggled into the past a small slip of paper on which was written the winning numbers for a lottery drawing. The prize was a dream house. And as soon as he got back from his time jump and ran to the living room, he saw his whole family there celebrating in front of the TV.

It took until the day after Wednesday for Max to realize that something wasn’t right. All of a sudden it was Friday. Where had Thursday gone? Nobody had ever heard of this day!

Max started to feel a bit uneasy. So even though a missing Thursday wasn’t exactly a catastrophe, he promised himself that he would only travel to the past in emergencies.

Unfortunately, just such an emergency arose a few days later, when his mother fell from a rickety ladder and broke her leg. Max had to do something about that, didn’t he? And so yet again he turned on the machine and traveled back to the past, then tightened the ladder’s loose screw.

Oh, if only he hadn’t done it! When he got back, his mother was doing great again. But suddenly, everyone was speaking a foreign language! And only after a while did he realize that they were speaking backward!

Oh no! This couldn’t be! What had he done? Things were getting worse and worse.

He started thinking frantically. Immediately, he came up with an idea that would fix everything: if he could stop himself from inventing the time machine, then none of this would ever happen and everything would be good again.

Since he could only travel a few days at a time into the past, he wrote a note:

“Dear Max, Don’t build a time machine, whatever you do. It ends badly. Please keep passing this note deeper into the past until it reaches a Max who doesn’t have a time machine yet. Yours, Future Max.”

He anxiously handed the note to his past self. And that self handed it to another Max deeper in the past. And so on.

But this time when Max came back from the past, everything had only gotten worse. Sure, his family was speaking forward again. And Thursdays were back. But everybody’s ears, noses, and feet were gigantic!
