What had happened was that deployed in line, only a few cavalrymen were directly in front of the compact ranks of the French square. Although another squadron followed up and did not face the same concentrated fire of the first French volley, their horses would not press home the attack against the defensive hedge of bayonets and the squadron flowed around it to the right. Captain Gouache maintained his square throughout the cavalry attacks and in that formation, marched steadily off the plain into cover. Cocks commented that ‘The dust and confusion ensured that the enemy got off through the corn into the woods.’

A portrayal of French infantry advancing.
