Later in the week Eric, the giant, comes in and out of the barn. I still haven’t said a word to him as he continues to bring me food and water. He unchained me once to shower in the barn bathroom which was more like a hose that sprays you off. There is a single toilet and sink, that’s it. Eric tries to reassure me that Sara will not kill me; she is just using me as leverage. For what, I have no idea.

I decide to stay quiet and not speak a word. Screw him for not helping me. He has had more than one opportunity to help me and he didn’t.

When I’m back at the stack of hay I’ve been chained near, I see Eric settle in his chair across from me.

“I won’t let them take you, Layla,” he almost whispers.

My eyes meet his curiously. “What do you mean you won’t let them take me?” I ask.

“I mean that if they come for you, I will kill them.”

“Why do you care all of a sudden?” I grind out. “When I needed you to step in, you didn’t! You stood there like a coward and let that bitch hurt me! What kind of a man are you?” I scream at him with all my might, feeling scared and unsure.

“Listen, I am not proud of my actions, and I know I should have done something. I have regretted it every day. I just needed some time to formulate a plan on getting her back here with the men that work with her so I can kill them,” he explains.

“Why would you even be working for someone like her in the first place?” I ask him.

“That I can tell you, but I need to trust you on this, Layla. What I’m about to tell you stays between us. This is a life or death situation.” He runs his hands through his messy dark hair. I nod and tell him to continue.

“You can trust me, Eric. I have no reason for you not to.”

“She has my sister. That vile woman somehow got to my little sister when she was asleep. Right under my nose,” he says painfully.

“How old is your sister?”

“Seventeen.” He blanches. “I have to get her back no matter the cost. I have done some things I’m not proud of, but I had to get Sara to trust me. Do you understand?” He looks straight in my eyes and I nod, feeling horrible for his poor sister.

“I am so sorry about your sister. Do you know where she is?” “Yes, I have her location. Now it’s just a waiting game.”

“I want to help you,” I blurt. He looks at me, relieved.

“You’re amazing, you know that, right?” he tells me.

“I wouldn’t say amazing, but I want to help get your sister back. We can work together. I know you overheard Sara talk about my parents. I bet I can get my father to trust me. There was an SD card with an address inside that I had.
