Harvard were written to his brothers in Israel—Benjamin, who had gone back to serve in the army, and Iddo, who had returned to Jerusalem to go to school. During this period Yoni often saw his parents, who were then living in Philadelphia, where his father was engaged in academic work.

Despite his success as a student at Harvard, Yoni decided to go back to Israel at the end of his first year. This decision he carried out. Upon his return to Israel, he entered the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, but after one term’s study, he came to the conclusion that he must go back to the army.
