CHAPTER 15.
___
Tuesday morning, on Helen's patio, Ben was reading the paper while Helen, deep in thought, enjoyed her second cup of coffee. Mambo, who was on his belly behind a potted palm watching every move a little green lizard was making, ignored the ringing of the phone. Helen got up to answer it, Ben folded the paper, Mambo blinked, and the lizard scampered away.
"Hi Nacho! Yes, we are too. Could you join us for some coffee on my patio? - I know, just wait five minutes and Ben will pick you up. Would you mind bringing some of Justin's donuts? - Thanks"
As soon as Ben returned with Nacho they got settled back on the patio where Nacho, seemingly concerned about something, did not let it deter him from serious donut munching. "You know guys, I just can't turn off the tape that's going around in my head. We just gotta figure out all this stuff about Jamie's death!"
Ben and Helen nodded in agreement. So, in the brilliant sunlight of the Hawaiian morning they turned their thoughts to a much darker topic: Mr. Twitchstick. They agreed that a murderer probably would not hang around for long afterwards, especially if he happened to be a stranger in town.
"If it was me," Nacho said, "I would have used an alias, done the dastardly deed, and faded like a Honkey's tan. Sorry, my pale friends, no insult intended."
"None taken, Ben and Helen replied in unison."
There was a long thoughtful silence, then all three spoke at once. "Sorry, Helen, ladies first."
Helen told Nacho about locating Twitchstick and the Smithes yesterday, and how she had actually talked to them. He was amazed, unlike Ben who had been angry about her meeting with Twitchstick. Helen secretly believed he was angry because she hadn't asked him to come along. Nevertheless, she had gotten a good lecture on the dangers of meddling.
Suddenly Nacho interrupted her thoughts. "What I'm thinking is, maybe we're way off the track. What if Twitchstick came here with a financial offer from the Senator, to get Jamie to disappear again? What if he is not the killer? What if he actually liked Jamie and decided to stay on here, in hopes of finding the killer himself."
"I don't think so, Nacho." Helen replied, "You should have seen those cold eyes when I told him I knew he was here before Jamie was killed. Brrrr!"
"Maybe Jamie's father arranged for a professional hit man, maybe someone who lives here!" Ben said.
"Ben, I just cannot believe the Senator would be able kill his own son or arrange for it to be done, either."
Then Nacho dropped a bombshell. "What if Sam is involved in all this? I'm not saying she's a murderer, but she is a little flaky and without even being aware of it, maybe she got herself involved."
"So what the heck are we going to do?" Helen asked. "How can we find out Twitchsctick's roll in all this - and what about Sam?"
Ben frowned. "Good questions Helen, but first things first.
