“So how did it happen?” Keeden asked once they were in the kitchen.

“What?” Maya asked, popping a grape in her mouth. They sat at the kitchen island: She eating grapes and cheese and he roasted chickpeas.

“The date.”

She ate another grape and frowned. “I told you it’s not a date.”

“Well, it’s not a business meeting.”

“You could come along if you want. He even suggested it.”

Keeden scratched the tip of his nose and flashed a sour grin. “Relax, I turned him down.”

Maya nodded surprised to feel disappointed. Even more surprised that she didn’t want to talk about it. She should feel victorious.

Only weeks ago news like this would have sent her over the moon, but now she felt mildly...unsatisfied. Bryant saw her as a friend but the strange thing was she was starting to see him the same way. He was still amazing, beautiful to look at, but just a guy. Instead she kept thinking about how Keeden had complimented her.

In a low silky tone that had made her inwardly shiver in delight.

She remembered how he’d softened his cold tone and confessed that he’d been embarrassed about her caring about him. Why would he feel embarrassed? She’d expected him to say ‘annoyed’ or ‘irritated’ that he found her a busybody. Instead he looked a little shy and vulnerable. She’d seen hints of awkward moments before but nothing like that. She wanted to know more about him. So much more. What was happening to her?

Keeden nudged her with his elbow. “I said relax.”

She turned to him. “Relax?”

“Yes, you suddenly got this horrified look on your face. You don’t have to worry, I’m not coming. You can keep your dear Bryant all to yourself.”

“Right.” Bryant. She was supposed to think about him. “There’s your proof. He was willing for you to tag along so it’s not a date.”

“You could turn it into one.”

“He asked me to go with him because he thought I needed a break from you. He thinks that I’ve been working hard without a break these past weeks.”

“I give you breaks. You’re the one who doesn’t take them. Did you tell him that? Of course not because I have to be the villain.”

“No one sees you as the villain. But you aren’t the easiest person to work with.”

“Yes, I am.” He stared at her surprised. “Do you really need a break from me?”

No. “Absolutely.” But not in the way that either man thought she did. She’d been thinking of Keeden way too much and the thought of leaving after her three weeks were up made her heart sink. She’d tried to come up with reasons to stay a little longer. But she’d never let him know that. “You can be a nuisance.”

“A nuisance?”

She nodded. “Who can listen to the entire soundtrack of Cowboy Bebop five hundred times?”

Keeden took a long swallow of his grape juice then glanced at her in a way that was oddly sexy. He sent her a secretive look as if he knew something she didn’t.

“You find that annoying huh?” he said.
