Rose could not sleep with the bulk of his body lying beside her. Her flesh protested, her stomach grinding.

At half-past five, she crept from the bed. The sky was lightening with soft purity as she let herself out into the garden. The church floated before her, its grey walls glimmering as the colourless light of the June dawn increased. She walked barefoot across the lawn to the low wall and climbed onto it, hauling her baby-stomach with her. Sitting with her back to the house, her naked toes touching the long grass in the graveyard, she noted that the weather had changed for the better: the storm was over.

In the garden, unruly roses were radiant against a tangle of leaves; honeysuckle was ripe with fragrance. She listened to the birds rouse themselves, in treetop and on chimney pot, to pipe in the day. Was it really nearly a year ago that she had been up this early, ready to mow Betony’s meadow?
