After Keegan left the solar, Beverielle went to the duchess, knelt before her and laid her head on her lap. “I do not know how I can thank you, Lady Duchess. For all you have done for me. You changed my life. In truth, you gave me a life, where none existed before.” She looked up at Isabella. “But I shall miss you, so greatly. You have become like a mother to me.”

The duchess stroked Bevvie’s hair. “I will miss you too, child. But the captain will provide you with a good life, and a prosperous one.” She tipped up Bevvie’s chin. “You will become a noble, and not just by birth. You will be married to a laird, the lady of the castle. Lady Beverielle Keegan of Kellie Castle.” Her soft smile radiated pride.

But concern cast cracks in Bevvie’s joy. “Do you think Keegan’s mother will accept me? It sounds as though she had other plans for Kellie Castle’s new laird .”

“Once she realizes you carry a child—her son and laird’s child—she will have no choice but to accept you.”

Bevvie’s stomach clenched. “Having no choice but to accept me doesn’t sound as though I’ll be lovingly enfolded into the clan.”

Isabella sighed and patted her cheek. “I will pray for you both, Beverielle.” The duchess rose and helped her to her feet. “Go now, and prepare for your journey. It sounds as though your betrothed intends to leave immediately after the handfasting. Again, tell no one. I will send a maid who can be trusted to your quarters to help you pack.”

Beverielle held back her own tears as she rose and saw them brimming in Isabella’s eyes.
