CHAPTER EIGHT

Meredith sat staring at the positive pregnancy test in disbelief. After a few moments, she slowly lowered herself onto the couch, phone in hand. With shaking fingers, she dialed Isabella's number.

"Hey Mer, what's up?" Isabella's cheerful voice greeted.

Meredith tried to respond but instead burst into tears.

"Whoa, what's wrong?" Isabella asked, concern evident even through the phone. "Talk to me."

Meredith took a deep breath. "Isa, I'm pregnant."

A pause "You're...you're pregnant?" Isabella repeated in shock.

"Yes. I just took a test and it was positive. I'm pregnant with Theo's baby," Meredith cried.

"Oh my God. Ok, just breathe. I'm coming over right now," Isabella said decisively.

Twenty minutes later, Isabella let herself into Meredith's apartment with her spare key. Meredith sat curled up on the couch, pregnancy test still in hand, tears flowing freely down her cheeks.

Isabella immediately went over and wrapped her arms around her friend. "Shhh it's going to be ok," she soothed.

Meredith clung to her, sobbing into her shoulder. "My life is over! How could I let this happen?"

"Hey hey none of that. We'll figure this out," Isabella said firmly. She gently stroked Meredith's hair. "Why don't you tell me what happened first?"

Meredith sat back and took a few shuddering breaths. "Well, Theo and I were always careful but I guess...I guess the night of the musuem gala we got caught up in the moment or something..." she trailed off, fresh tears forming. "I can't believe I have a mafia boss's baby inside me! What am I going to do?"

Isabella chose her next words carefully. "You don't have to make any decisions right this second. But you do have options - adoption, termination..."

"No!" Meredith cut her off sharply. "I could never terminate this pregnancy. This baby is a part of Theo and I, a product of our love, as messed up as it is." More softly she added, "I always dreamed I'd be a mother one day. And now that dream is coming true, just...not how I imagined."

Isabella nodded slowly. "Alright, so you'll go through with the pregnancy then. What about after the birth? Will you keep the baby and raise it yourself?"

Meredith's jaw set in determination. "Yes. I cannot subject an innocent child to the danger and violence of the mafia world. I'll raise this baby myself, far away from all of that."

"Ok," Isabella said gently. "Then that's what we'll do." She squeezed Meredith's hand supportively.

They sat in silence for a few moments before Meredith spoke again. "I should tell Maria too. She's always been like a mother to me and I know I can trust her."

"That's a great idea," Isabella encouraged. "You know Maria will support you no matter what."

After Isabella left, Meredith drove out to Maria's farmhouse on the outskirts of town. Maria opened the door and immediately noticed Meredith's red-rimmed eyes.

"Oh child, what's happened?" Maria asked, pulling Meredith inside and sitting her down. Meredith burst into tears again, unable to speak. Patiently Maria waited for the story to come out.

Finally, Meredith raised her head. "Maria I...I'm pregnant. With Theo's child," she revealed brokenly.
