FOURTEEN
Joshua finally found the desire to open Lissaâs letter. The truth was, heâd been upset with her because sheâd ruined his chances with Susan. Which was the most ridiculous thing that had ever come to his mind. Lissa had nothing to do with Susanâs abandonment. Nee, the fault rested squarely on his own shoulders. But his secret would have remained hidden, had Lissaâs letter not arrived. So somehow, his mind wanted to shift the blame. But he knew better.
The sooner he cut ties with his former aldi, the sooner he could continue with his life here in Indiana. Ach, how had he come to these thoughts? He sounded so callous and uncaring, even to himself. It was almost as if the moment heâd decided that he and Lissa werenât right for each other, his mind flipped a one-eighty.
He had to keep a steady head and remember that he wasnât the only one with thoughts and feelings in this equation. Heâd always felt he needed to protect Lissa from negative emotions. Now, he would be the one projecting those negative emotions onto her.
Iâve become a jerk, Lord. Help me not to be. Give me the right words so I donât hurt anybody. Of course, heâd already hurt Susan. The thought pained his heart.
He let the letter fall open between his hands, and his eyes moved over the words. He found himself scanning most of it, the part about her schweschder and the baby and diaper changes. Until something of interest caught his eye.
How long are you and your folks planning to be in Indiana?
Ach, she thought they were just visiting? If that was the case, she hadnât read his letter yet, which heâd already figured. Perhaps he should just rewrite the letter and send it to her today. Sheâd likely get it quicker than when she arrived home, which was still at least a week away, by the sound of it. Then he could just tell her to disregard the letter heâd left with his folks.
He rummaged through the small desk in the dawdi haus and located some lined paper, then found a pen.
Hi, Lissa.
Iâm not sure who told you about my family coming to Indiana, but weâre not here for just a visit. Weâre moving here permanently.
With that being the case, I think itâs best that we end our courtship. Long-distance relationships seldom work out. Feel free to let other men court you. I wonât be holding you back.
He paused. Should he tell her about Susan? Nee. She didnât need to know that heâd already moved on. That knowledge might just cause her unnecessary grief, and getting this news would be difficult enough for her.
I hope you have a nice life there in Pennsylvania and find someone worthy of you to share your life with.
Your Friend,
Joshua Beachy
He folded the letter and stuck it in an envelope, then sighed in relief once heâd stamped it and sent it on its way. He would have preferred to call Lissa, but she hadnât included a phone number.
