CHAPTER 7
“Mom, Mom, Mom,” Bennie squealed when he came charging into the kitchen the next morning. “Guess what?”
“What?” Mom said, her eyes wide like she was ready to be amazed.
“Wart says he’s gonna help me with my Halloween costume. Isn’t that right, Wart?”
As I spooned cereal into my mouth, I could see the surprised look on Mom’s face. “I said we’ll see.”
Bennie bounced over to the table like a kangaroo, and Mom put his toast down in front of him. “But you are, right? You’re gonna help me make a Halloween costume, ’cause Halloween is coming real soon and Teacher says I got to have a costume for school. Isn’t that right, Mom?” Mom smiled and nodded at him.
“So when you gonna help me, Wart?”
“Maybe when you stop calling me Wart.”
Bennie put down his peanut butter and pickle toast. With a serious look on his face — well, as serious as you can get when your face is plastered in peanut butter and toast crumbs — he said, “Okay, I promise I won’t call you Wart no more, even though that’s your name. So what you want me to call you?”
“My real name, dufus.”
“Dufus? That’s not your real name.” He scratched his chin, looking confused. “That’s not his real name, right, Mom?”
Mom snickered from behind me. “You make a good point, Bennie.”
“But I’ll call you Dufus if that’s what you want me to call you … Dufus.” Bennie looked pleased with himself. I’d walked right into that one.
Mom covered her mouth, but I knew she was laughing. Then she got serious. “Thank you, Warren. I appreciate that you’re going to help your brother. That means a lot to Dad and me.”
I thought about the things Bennie had said the night before and wondered if she’d overheard. If she had, I was glad she didn’t ask me about it.
