Neil Diamond captured our theatrical revivalism all too well in his now classic hit song “Brother Love’s Travelling Salvation Show,” the sawdust trail of Pentecostal evangelists making a living off their own mystique. But when I was in college, everything changed. The concept of revival was transformed from falling down in a weeklong series of services a few times a year to going for revival all the time. It became a buzzword in the Pentecostal tradition like no other, as if you could just say the word and people would fall down. Prayer meetings became focused on getting this thing called revival to happen and to stick around as long as possible.

I think this shift from revival as a planned moment to an ongoing reality comes from our search for identity. Pentecostals had been looking for a buzzword to call our very own for a long time. Baptists had “saved” and mainline Protestants had “social justice.” Mennonites and Quakers had “pacifism.” But we didn’t have anything all our own. We couldn’t rightly claim the Holy Spirit, since everybody else did too, so when “revival” became the rage, we built a bandwagon and rode it until it broke. It all started in a town called Brownsville.
