Chapter 17: Is Islam compatible with the West?

“Tolerance becomes a crime when applied to evil.”

~ Thomas Mann

While we are prepared to criticize other ideologies, governments, belief systems, our leaders in the West go out of their way to ingratiate themselves with Islam. We are told by Western leaders that Islam is compatible with the West. From Justin Trudeau to Theresa May, Barack Obama, and Angela Merkel.

Federica Mogherini, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission since November 2014, said in 2016:

"The idea of a clash between Islam and “the West” – a word in which everything is put together and confused – has misled our policies and our narratives. Islam holds a place in our Western societies. Islam belongs in Europe. It holds a place in Europe's history, in our culture, in our food and – what matters most – in Europe's present and future.”

“Some people are now trying to convince us that a Muslim cannot be a good European citizen, that more Muslims in Europe will be the end of Europe. These people are not just mistaken about Muslims: these people are mistaken about Europe; they have no clue what Europe and the European identity are.”

"The so-called Islamic State is putting forward an unprecedented attempt to pervert Islam for justifying a wicked political and strategic project. … Daʼesh is Islam's worst enemy in today's world. Its victims are first and foremost Muslim people. Islam is a victim itself.”

"I am not afraid to say that political Islam should be part of the picture. Religion plays a role in politics – not always for good, not always for bad. Religion can be part of the process. What makes the difference is whether the process is democratic or not."

In 2009, Barack Obama said in his Cairo speech “A New Beginning” that “America and Islam are not exclusive and need not be in competition. Instead, they overlap, and share common principles of justice and progress, tolerance and the dignity of all human beings.”

In 2014 President Obama sent these wishes[353] to the Muslim community:

“While Eid marks the completion of Ramadan, it also celebrates the common values that unite us in our humanity and reinforces the obligations that people of all faiths have to each other, especially those impacted by poverty, conflict, and disease.”

“In the United States, Eid also reminds us of the many achievements and contributions of Muslim Americans to building the very fabric of our nation and strengthening the core of our democracy. That is why we stand with people of all faiths, here at home and around the world, to protect and advance their rights to prosper, and we welcome their commitment to giving back to their communities.”

Addressing the Islamic Society of Baltimore on February 3, 2016, former U.S. President Barack Obama declared:

“it is possible to be faithful to Islam and to be part of a pluralistic society… and to believe in democracy.”[354]

Except, of course, that leading Muslim scholars have said otherwise as I explained in the chapter about Shirk.
