where Cr2O72−(aq) is orange and CrO42−(aq) is yellow, the addition of base will force the forward reaction to occur with a colour change from orange to yellow, and the addition of acid will force the reverse reaction to occur with a colour change from yellow to orange. These observations help to confirm the reversibility of the reaction. This was not possible in the iron(III) thiocyanate reaction.
