It was truly curious to notice the early ship-builder … most assiduously putting together short pieces of angle iron, and regularly scarfing their ends together to form from their assemblage a single iron frame, all formed out of little pieces. Happily there came an end of this, for he found it easier, cheaper, and stronger, to have his frame rolled in one piece or at the most in two: and in a short time he found out how, out of an angle iron of moderate dimensions to bend or weld a complete frame, all in one length. But it was a long time before he could reconcile his mind to this fine simplicity; and even to this day there are rude ways of patching one angle iron onto the back of another, to give something like a rough imitation of the graduation in strength which used to run from keel to gunwale, in a timber ship.
