Propositions

There is still widespread belief in the imaginary stable orthodoxy, but mine is hardly the only iconoclastic vision; the mix of contention and invention in the literature (which has grown apace since I completed "Beyond Belief" in 1980) puts it practically off limits to all but the hardy specialists, which is probably just as well. Others are encouraged to avert their gaze until we get our act together.

And yet, these others might provide an important infusion of reality into an increasingly inbred and artifactual subdiscipline. After all, if there is one thing the rest of academia really seems to need from philosophers, it is a theory of propositions, or at least a theory of something like propositions. The term "information" is commonly used as a mass noun, as if information were some kind of substance that could be moved, stored, compressed, chopped up. Theorists in disciplines as diverse as neuroscience, ethology, economics, and literary criticism pretend to know how to measure and characterize batches of this stuff we call information. According to the mass media, we now live in the Information Age, but in fact we have no sound and mutually recognized understanding of what information is and what kinds of parcels it should be measured in.
