Tocqueville grasps that paradoxical conversion of the unlimited into a limit with which democratic equality levels out human aspirations, creating a disproportion between desires, the efforts made to satisfy them, and the mediocrity of the results obtained. It is a disproportion very quickly noticed by individuals who, in the face of impassable barriers, end up relinquishing their great ambitions:

What chiefly diverts the men of democracies from lofty ambition is not the scantiness of their fortunes, but the vehemence of the exertions they daily make to improve them. They strain their faculties to the utmost to achieve paltry results, and this cannot fail speedily to limit their discernment and to circumscribe their powers. (DA, 548)
