“I’ve found two other instances of surveillance being put on a loop since we arrived on this dirt ball.”

Dax scratched his chin while he absorbed Cleo’s report. Damn, he always forgot how itchy his beard could be growing back in. Shaving was a pain and given that Wen liked the feel of his facial hair, maybe he should let it grow. He paused mid-scratch as the import of his thoughts hit him. Since when did he care what the Travian boy thought? They weren’t lovers, not really—merely two people thrown together, two people who didn’t have much trust in each other. At least, he didn’t trust the kid. No way to know exactly what was going on in that alien head of his, other than at the moment of coming. Wen’s face gave away all his feelings then. It was easy for Dax to read the pure pleasure that orgasming gave the guy.

Not that he gave a rat’s ass how the alien felt. Except that he kind of did. Shit.

“Boss, are you listening?”

Dropping his hand and his inappropriate train of thought, Dax looked at Cleo. “Yeah, I hear you.”

“Daydreaming about your fuck toy, Dax?” Ben stood in the corner of the command hut with his arms crossed and a mulish expression.

Cleo opened her mouth to admonish the kid yet again, but Dax held up his hand and sauntered over to him. He had the satisfaction of causing Ben to drop his arms and back up a step.

“You know, Ben, we may not be exactly a spit and polish kind of military, but we do have rank, and rank has its privileges. One of mine as the commander of our little band of brothers and sisters is that I can kick your bony ass for your insubordination, secure in the knowledge that Cleo and Branch will study their fingernails while I do it, so that they can claim not to have seen a goddam thing.”

He pressed in closer, allowing his chest to bump up against the boy’s and making him tilt his head way up in order to look Dax in the eye. “I brought you up to speed on this security breach because I trust you, and we may need your whiz-kid mind to help out. But I will not—I repeat—will not allow you to offer up commentary on my relationship with Wen. I fuck him because I have to. I also happen to like fucking him because fucking feels fucking good even if the circumstances for the fucking are all fucked up. Eventually, hopefully, I will stop fucking him, and when that happens, I will not ever start fucking you. Do you fucking understand me, mister?”

Ben looked away and after a couple of seconds passed, nodded once—a terse, wordless acknowledgment of Dax’s short tirade. And, even at an angle, Dax could see that the kid’s eyes had filled up with unshed tears. Great. Just great. Dax stepped back, but he didn’t apologize or try to soothe away any hurt.
