Chapter 17

"I'm still not sure this is a good idea," Jury muttered the next morning as Doc drove Darius's car towards a poor district of the Hidden.

"For the most part, unless we start flashing money," Doc argued, "We'll fit right in."

"That's the least of my worries," Jury huffed.

"You're right. She'll cause a fuss. Sofia, you're too showy; do you think you can tone it down a bit?"

"What?" she gasped from the back seat.

"Can't you use your magic to make yourself look more... normal?"

"Goddamn," Jury hissed. "Where's your Southern charm?"

"We don't have all day," Doc responded.

"A damn monkey could have been more tactful."

"You're the one who brought it up."

"I did not!" Jury snapped. "That's not even what I meant."

"Why didn't you say so?"

"I didn't not say so!" He sighed deeply. "You want me to glamour her?"

Doc considered that, then said, "No. It'll be alright. I'll protect her."

"That's ridiculous. I'll protect her." Jury insisted.

"I'm not sure you know how," Doc drawled, enjoying the outraged look on Jury's face.

"I've protected your ass more than once!"

"I let you think you did. It helps your general self-confidence and cheer. You were rather depressed that day."

"Goddamn it," Jury sputtered.

"I can protect myself, thank you," Sofia said icily.

"Excellent," Doc chuckled. "Would you mind keeping an eye on Jury while you're at it? He's a little off his game today."

"I can still kick your ass," Jury growled.

"I could use another tooth."

"Quit bickering," Darius ordered. "It's childish."

"I still don't understand why he's here," Jury ground out.

"He's helping us, and he deserves a little reward for his trouble," Doc explained once again.

"But he's a norm," Jury argued.

"I used to be a norm. I know how it feels."

"Fine, but if we get in trouble for this, I'm blaming it on you."

"I'd expect nothing less."

"Are you guys like enemies or something?" Sofia asked.

"Nah, they're like an old married couple," Darius put in with a chuckle.

Doc cast a sideways glance at Jury. "They just don't get us," he said with a shrug.

"No one does," Jury agreed.

Doc parked the car, and they all climbed out onto the sidewalk. Sofia looked up and down the street, then demanded, "So where is it?"

They were standing in front of two apartment buildings. Jury and Doc could easily see the doorway squished between them, but Sofia and Darius didn't see a thing. Doc had never been to this particular access point, but he knew from the sign that it was a doorway to a city, not just a building.

There were several different kinds of Hidden places. The House of Banshee and Bluegrass Goodhunt's house were a single building hidden between or behind norm buildings.

This, however, was a Hidden neighborhood, which meant there was an entire city structure behind that tiny door, which made no sense whatsoever. Jury had tried to explain pocket dimensions and hidden spaces, but Doc had never been able to grasp it. All he could say was that on this side it looked like a closet door, but once you passed through the doorway there was an entire city on the other side.
