Labienus, Titus Atius (100–15 BC) Roman soldier who was Julius Caesar’s ablest subordinate in Gaul but fought against him in the civil war (see ⇨Civil Wars, Roman Republican). In Gaul he was trusted with the largest and most responsible independent commands. He may, however, have been associated with Pompey the Great from the beginning of his career. He supported Pompey at Pharsalus (see ⇨Pharsalus, Battle of), Ruspina (see ⇨Ruspina, Battle of), and Thapsus (see ⇨Thapsus, Battle of) before being killed in the aftermath of Munda (see ⇨Munda, Battle of).

Lachish fortified city (modern Tell ed Duweir) of Judah that was besieged by the Assyrian king ⇨Sennacherib in 701 BC and later destroyed by ⇨Nebuchadnezzar of Babylonia in 589 BC.

First fortified about 1750 BC, Lachish became a seat of government about 1000 BC during the reign of King ⇨David of Judah. It was reforti-fied by his grandson Rehoboam with a 6-m-/20-ft-wide wall enclosing a 20-ha / 50-acre site. During the reign of Hezekiah the city fell to the Assyrians, and the site was razed after being besieged by the Babylonians under Nebuchadnezzar.

lac tuong ancient Vietnamese military aristocracy of the Van Lang (about 700–220 BC) and Au Lac (about 220–180 BC) kingdoms. They and their lac hau civil equivalents retained local authority even after the conquest of ⇨Zhao Tuo until the defeat of ⇨Trung Trac’s rebellion.

Lade, Battle of decisive sea battle between the Persians and the rebel Greeks of Asia Minor, about 494 BC, effectively ending the Ionian Revolt. It was fought off what was then a small island called Lade, now a small hill in the alluvial plain of the Turkish river Maeander, northwest of the ancient city of Miletus.

The Greeks, commanded by Dionysius of Phocaea, mustered only 353 triremes against the Persian 600. Dionysius drilled them in a manoeuvre known as the ⇨diekplous until they refused to train any more. Worse still, when the battle began 49 of the 60 Samian ships fled, along with all 70 ships from Lesbos and most of the others. The 100 ships from Chios fought gallantly, allegedly using the diekplous, but were overwhelmed.

laeti Barbarian military settlers (or prisoners) who were allocated land in Roman territory and were required to provide recruits for the Roman army.

Lahore fortified city on the river Ravi, Punjab, in present-day Pakistan, first recorded in 630. It was taken by the Muslim invader ⇨Mahmud of Ghazni in 1020, fell to the Mongols in 1241, was sacked by ⇨Timur Leng (Tamerlane) in 1398, and was rebuilt by Mubarak Shah, Sultan of Delhi, in 1422.

In 1432 Bahlol Khan Lodi, governor of Lahore, marched to Delhi and founded the line of Lodi sultans who ruled until the rise of the Mogul Empire early in the 16th century.

Lake Peipus, Battle of battle fought on 5 April 1242 on a frozen Russian lake in which the Russian leader ⇨Alexander Nevsky defeated Danish and German crusaders, including Teutonic Knights (see ⇨Military Order), who were operating along the southern Baltic and had attacked Novgorod.

Alexander met the crusaders at Raven’s Rock, the narrowest crossing point between the two frozen lakes of Peipus and Pskov.
