CHAPTER 4.6
INCA TRANSFORMATIONS OF THE CHACHAPOYA REGION
INGE SCHJELLERUP
INCREASINGLY, the scholarly literature on the Tahuantinsuyu addresses how Inca state policies were a response to the challenges presented by the diversity of the conquered ethnic groups and regions. The aim of this chapter is to reconstruct the socioeconomic impact that Inca rule had on the Chachapoya and the geographic landscape they inhabited. The discussion is based on archaeological and ethnohistorical sources, supplemented with botanic and bioarchaeological data. If only archaeological sources were available for the study, these would reveal that during the late pre-Hispanic period the Chachapoya region was heavily populated with Chachapoya and Inca settlements and that intensive agriculture dominated production. This would in turn indicate that the Chachapoya had accepted and supported Inca rule. In contrast, if we were to use historical sources only, these would support the Chachapoyaâs rebellious character, as evidenced by their constant revolts against the Incas. Thus, a combination of sources best captures the Inca conquest and its repercussions.
