Chapter 12
Neveah pleasantly stared at the group frolicking in the water⦠although the temper raging inside her was nothing but pleasant.
She was the last one to receive an invitation.
The very last!
That was something that had never happened to her before in her life. She was always picked first. She knew for appearances sake, she couldnât always be first during the show, but to be dead last?
That was an insult.
And then to add to that insult⦠they were all playing around in the pool⦠having fun!
Every outfit she had was donated by high-end designers and she had an obligation to return every outfit.
And this dress was her favorite!
It accentuated her hips, her eyes, and showed off her incredibly toned legs.
âHow dare that little twit, wearing a stupid, outdated, dress pantsuit⦠twice no less⦠get picked first,â she mumbled to herself.
Something had to be done.
She cringed at the first thought that came to her, but she shook it off.
âThis is war!â she declared silently.
She looked at the other two who also didnât get in the water⦠Devanee and Aaliyah.
âNo pool time for you two?â she smiled politely.
âWig,â Aaliyah said as she pointed to her head.
âThe dye in this dress will bleed in the pool,â Devanee said sadly.
âLaugh loudly,â announced Neveah and the three laughed aloud.
Seconds later, Matt swam over to them. âWonât you come join us?â
âYou enjoy your quick dip, handsome,â Neveah purred. âIâd rather watch you from here.â
âThat did the trick,â Neveah thought smugly. But her triumph was shortened as Evie hit the beachball which smacked Matt in the face.
âOh no, you didnât!â Matt teased.
He then took two large breast strokes and caught Evie before she could get away. He caught her by the waist, lifted her up, and dunked her under the water. When she immerged, Matt tried to do the same thing again, but Evie maneuvered herself to Mattâs back and then wrapped her legs around his waist, locking them in place.
Matt instantly went under the water and held his breath. Neveah figured Evie would let go of her grip but Evie didnât budge. He merged back to the surface and turned around to see if Evie was alright.
Neveah would have done anything to have smacked that crooked smile off Evieâs face. Neveah looked at Matt and he had that look he always had when he stared at Evie. If Neveah had been a romantic, she would have thought Matt actually cared for Evie.
Neveah knew better. Romance was fake. It was better left in those sappy Hallmark movies that she couldnât stand watching.
âI will not be an afterthought!â
She would do what needed to be done⦠and she would do it that night!
