And speaking of the “spirit or soul,” I take exception to the claim that people “have” souls. Living human beings, from my point of view, “are” souls, which means we’re simply physical, mortal individuals. When the brain stops functioning as the coordinating center of sensation, intellect, and nerve activity; when the lungs gasp and cease bringing in air, and breath escapes our bodies for the final time; when the heart stops pumping blood, we’re no longer living souls but dead souls.

Further, with respect to the definitions of the words religious and spiritual, I feel they are intertwined. People who try to separate these definitions, especially those of a “spiritual” bent, may suffer from a form of religious schizophrenia. Do they think they’re more devout and reverential than others?

Actually, it seems to me that most religious people would almost unanimously claim for themselves spirituality. I can see how some people, therefore, would be offended by being told, “You’re ‘religious’ but not ‘spiritual.’” According to the definitions of the basic words themselves, can you even have so-called spirituality without religion of some sort? What’s the big deal anyway?
