The Irish Confederate Wars

The Irish Confederate Wars (Eleven Years War) was an epic conflict that involved the three kingdoms, England, Scotland and Ireland which were all under the ruling of Charles I.

What signaled the start of the war was the killing of thousands of Scots and English Protestants by the Catholic Irish Rebellions in Ulster on October 1641. Hearing of this massacre, The Scottish Covenanters and King Charles I sent out their troops to Ireland in early 1642 to appease the rebellions.

The Scottish force managed to oust the rebellions from Ulster, while the English blocked their entrance to Dublin. Stuck in-between, the Catholic Irish rebels then settled at the capital of Kilkenny and established an administration of their own – the Catholic Confederation. The members of this confederation consisted of both Old English and Gaelic. With the boon of other European Catholic forces, they soon amassed their own army and managed to occupy Wexford and Waterford.

The Confederates— until 1649— ruled most parts of Ireland, defeating both the English and Scottish army on most battle fields. But then, due to several disagreements and conflicts the Irish Catholic Confederates lost their union. Some of the Confederate members stayed loyal to the Catholic religion and the Confederate and others sided for King Charles I.

During this time the English Parliament sent out Oliver Cromwell to re-conquer Ireland. Then, Cromwell, with a large force known as the New Model Army, arrived in Ireland.
