Michael Schumacher, who does not finish exploding with Ferrari, is forced to miss six grands prix after the worst accident of his career in Great Britain, so he is replaced by Mika Salo. Despite this, he manages to retain fifth place in the standings, while his teammate Eddie Irvine wins the runner-up, remaining just two points behind Häkkinen.
