The Esk Valley Railway

Rural railways are almost a thing of the past but the one you pass under near Kildale is thriving. The Esk Valley Railway 25 follows the beautiful valley of the River Esk for nearly 36 miles (58km) from Whitby to Kildale then onwards to Middlesbrough. Under threat of closure on more than one occasion, it has survived and indeed has extended the number of stations on the line to eighteen, to accommodate passengers visiting the James Cook University Hospital. Although now a single line, the route was made up of several sections gradually linked up over a number of years. The oldest part is the 6 mile (3.5km) length between Whitby and Grosmont which was originally part of the Pickering Whitby railway opened in 1836. Other sections were opened in 1861 and 1865, until a final link to Middlesbrough was made to complete the line now known as the Esk Valley Railway.
