Lachlan awakened in the early hours of dawn, his body so attuned to its schedule that even now, it did not stray from its strict hours. But when he opened his eyes and looked at the plaid ceiling above him, at first, he was confused.

Where am I? he wondered, for the ceiling of his room at the castle was certainly not the plaid pattern he saw atop him. It was dark, grey stone, and he had looked at that ceiling nearly every day for the last fifteen years, for though he was called away to hunts and the occasional issue in the village that left him far from his bed late into the night, he had always preferred to ride back to the castle rather than sleep elsewhere. Castle Morcoille was his to protect, as were its inhabitants, and he grew uneasy if he was away for too long.

But now, as his eyes adjusted to the weak light and he looked down at his chest, he saw the dark strands of curls that topped his favorite face in this world or the next and remembered that he was on his honeymoon, asleep in a tent made of plaid with his wife quite literally by his side. Though they had fallen asleep with a hand’s width between them, sometime in the night, Rowan had curled into him. Now, her head was resting on his chest, one cheek against the fabric of his shirt. Her left arm was slung across his belly as though it were the most natural thing in the world, the way she slept every night, and this warmed him to his very core.

Her waking self might not be truly comfortable in his presence, but it was clear her sleeping self was different. In sleep, she was tame as a newborn lamb and just as trusting. The sight of her resting against him roused feelings of love for her so strong they hit him like a wave, threatening to suck him into the undertow, and he watched the rise and fall of her chest, feeling like the luckiest man in the world that this was the sight that would greet him each day for the rest of his life.

Of course, this was not the first time he had shared a bed with a lass; indeed, there were a few women in the village whom he had shared pleasures with, but nothing could compare to the bliss he was now experiencing at the sight of his Rowan snuggled tight to him. He took more pleasure from this than from all those encounters combined, for this was the culmination of a years-long infatuation that he had rarely let himself feel the full force of. It had been easier to let his love for her form a backdrop to his life, rather than command the foreground.

But now, all alone with her in his arms, Lachlan let himself fall completely into his adoration of her, going so far as to lean toward her
