CHAPTER 19

“The Bountiful Baron understands that sometimes the only available

transportation is a leap of faith.”

— THE THIRD INSTALLMENT OF THE TRUE ADVENTURES OF THE BOUNTIFUL BARON: WESTERN BENEFACTOR TO BLOND, BEAUTIFUL, AND BETRAYED WOMEN.

Written by John J. Bookman, 1874.

Gemma looped her arms around Murphy’s neck and kissed him back. She sighed as she felt his firm, cool lips on hers, making her feel things she hadn’t felt since she was a girl.

This is what she’d wanted. This is what she’d wanted since she’d sat waiting for Murphy to awaken this morning. What she’d hoped would happen before Jack had interrupted. After being held in his arms, after having him keep her nightmares at bay, after enduring the noise of his exhausted snoring, Gemma had hoped—thought—no, dreamed—he would wake up and kiss her good morning.

The way he was doing now.

She’d deliberately picked a fight with him to get this. Because other than the first time, when he’d thought she was Missy Dandridge, the only time Murphy had kissed her was when he was frustrated and pushed beyond his limits of control. She’d wanted him to kiss her. Plain and simple. Except it wasn’t so simple. Gemma wanted Murphy’s kisses. What she didn’t understand was why she wanted them. Why he affected her when no one else ever had. What was it about the Bountiful Baron that made her crave his kisses?

“I lost you for a minute there,” he murmured in the low, rumbling whisper that sent thrills throughout her body. “Stop trying to figure it out. What’s going on between us defies logic, so turn off that keen mind of yours and forget about everything except me.” He nibbled on her earlobe.

“Make me,” she ordered, tightening her hold on him by cupping the back of his head and threading her fingers through his thick, black hair, bending him lower so he could deepen their kiss.

Make me. Murphy knew he could. There was no doubt about that. He had done it the first time he’d kissed her and every time thereafter. He could do it again. But should he? Just because she’d dared him?

A true gentleman would ignore her challenge. He’d been schooled by Jesuits and taught to be a gentleman. He should ignore her challenge. He knew better than to become emotionally involved with a client. But Murphy was a man first. And an Irishman. And no Irishman he knew had ever backed down from a challenge. Especially when the challenge came from a beautiful woman who wanted to be kissed…

“I lost you for a minute there,” she whispered against his lips, deliberately echoing his own words. “Stop trying to figure it out. What’s between us defies logic, so turn off that keen mind of yours.” She nipped his bottom lip, then moved to his ear and traced the shell of it with her tongue. “And make me forget everything but you. I dare you.”

“I’ve never walked away from a dare in my life,” he warned her.

“Then don’t start now.” She
