The Superstar
"For all that is in the world--the desire of the flesh, the desire of the eyes, the pride in riches--comes not from the Father . . .”
1 John 2:16
He heard the fans chanting for an encore as he made his way back stage. Security guards escorted him through the hallways of the arena. A crowd had already formed around his tour bus as he climbed aboard. The bus pulled through the giant loading doors. He looked out the window, smiling at the enormous sign on the side of the arena. It read, “Bobby Lane in Concert.” It never ceased to amaze him. Bobby couldn’t believe thousands of people were still flocking to his shows.
Bobby got a drink from his fully stocked bar and made his way to the back of the bus to retrieve his pills. He sank into the plush leather couch and watched the sleet and snow pelting the windows.
Bobby leaned forward to the driver. “What is the weather supposed to do? Get better or worse?”
“It’s going to get worse before we’re through,” the driver said.
“I have to be in Indianapolis by tomorrow night. Make it happen!” Bobby yelled.
“Yes, sir, Mr. Lane,” the driver said.
A small fleet of trucks had already arrived in Indianapolis in advance of his next concert. Hundreds of lighting and sound technicians, and staging and set designers, were employed for each tour.
Bobby lay down on the couch and tried to rest.
The superstar had been asleep for several hours when a sharp jolt awakened him. Items were flying off the shelves. He bolted up. The bus began swerving from left to right. He stumbled toward the front.
“Are you trying to kill us?” he screamed.
The driver was too busy to respond. The luxury coach had hit a patch of ice on a high mountain bridge, and they were skidding sideways. Bobby glanced out the side window. A jack-knifed tractor-trailer was hurling towards them.
Shattering glass and crunching metal drowned out their screams. Both vehicles ripped through the guardrail, tumbling downward through the cold winter night.
Bobby opened his mouth, prepared to scream. A beautiful melody filled his throat. He opened his eyes to see a flock of cardinals joining him in song. He was lying on his back under a sprawling oak tree. He closed his mouth. The birds continued to chirp and flutter. Slowly, he pulled himself to a sitting position and leaned against the trunk of the tree. The beautiful melody that had replaced his screams made him think perhaps he was delusional. Bobby was sure he had suffered a severe concussion. Cautiously he reached behind his head, expecting to find a bloody mess. There was no wound. He did not even have a headache.
He remembered the blurring flashes of his life as he plummeted toward the bottom of the ravine. The snowy rocks awaited him below. The horror of his reality had made him scream as he closed his eyes for impact. That memory contradicted everything he was now seeing. He patted himself, finding no broken bones or injuries.
