Chapter Eleven
âI need your advice.â
Lord Knoxbridgeâs eyes flared with a sudden excitement as he sat up a little straighter in his chair.
âAre you about to confess to me your feelings for Lady Cassandra?â
Scoffing at this, Jonathan rolled his eyes and let out a bark of laughter, all to hide his immediate sense of embarrassment.
âI hardly think so.â So saying, he pulled out the broken diamond bracelet from his pocket and set it on the table. âIt is nothing to do with Lady Cassandra. Instead. I need your advice about this. It is not mine, you see.â
Lord Knoxbridgeâs eyes widened.
âWhy do you have such a thing in your possession if it is not your own?â
Letting out a small sigh, Jonathan lifted one shoulder.
âThat is part of the problem. It has been a fortnight since I found this in my pocket â the butler handed it to me, after taking my coat when I returned to my home, and since then I have not known what to do with it.â
âI do not understand.â Sitting up straighter on his chair, Lord Knoxbridge leaned forward so that he might look at the bracelet more carefully. âClearly this is an item of great value. Are the diamonds real? They donât appear to be paste, I think.â
Briefly touching the bracelet with gentle fingers, Jonathan nodded.
âI assume so.â
âAnd you do not know who it belongs to?â
He shook his head.
âAs I said, I found it in my pocket some two weeks ago and since then, have been making some discreet enquiries to attempt to discover who rightfully owns it. First of all, I thought it might be Lady Cassandraâs or Lady Yardleyâs. Neither of them made any remark when I mentioned a diamond bracelet, so it cannot belong to them. There has been no whisper of a lost bracelet amongst society, so therefore I do not know how I am to return it to the rightful owner nor how it came to be in my pocket in the first place.â
His lips twisting, Lord Knoxbridge lifted his head.
âAnd you do not remember everyone present on the evening when you discovered it, I should imagine.â
Wincing, Jonathan shook his head.
âNo doubt someone gave it to me at some point in the evening â for safekeeping, given its status, and I have quite forgotten about it. My head was a little muddled on one evening, as you may recall. That is the night in question.â
A broad smile settled across Lord Knoxbridgeâs face.
âYes, I recall that â and why you were not in the best of situations.â His smile faded a little. âThen did someone place it in your pocket that evening?â
âI have no doubt that someone gave it to me for safekeeping; there can be no malevolence there,â Jonathan replied firmly. âI do recall dancing with a few young ladies, though I cannot remember all of their names. Perhaps something happened during one of the dances and I was then required to take the bracelet from them. I do not remember it
