Addiction: When You Can’t Stop Working

It’s obvious that people who are compulsive often work too much. What’s not so obvious is that work can be seriously and debilitatingly addictive.3 Addiction occurs not just with substances but also with behaviors. These are known as process addictions.4 Here are some indications that you may be addicted:

Salience: the activity becomes the most important thing in your life.

Mood modification: doing the activity makes you feel better at first.

Tolerance: you need to spend more time doing the activity to get the high.

Withdrawal symptoms: you feel uncomfortable when you’re not doing the activity.

Conflict: a battle evolves within yourself or with people around you about how much time you spend in the activity.

Relapse: you try to stop the activity but fail.
